Some observations on the ecology of an estuarine mangrove of Goa

A.G. Untawale, A.H. Parulekar

The ecology of a fringing mangrove in Zuari Estuary, Goa, India was studied. The mangrove represents a typical tropical estuarine ecosystem with a strong monsoonal and tidal influence. Heavy precipitation lowers the salt content considerably and increases the sediment load. The nutrients, especially inorganic phosphate, exhibit an inverse relationship with the sediment load. Large seasonal changes in phytoplankton and benthic production were observed. Despite the large fluctuations in the environmental factors, the mangrove ecosystem remains rich in organic matter
