The fecundity of grey mullet Mugil cephalus L. along the Goa Coast
Abstract
Ovarian egg counts have been made on 22 mature grey mullets, Mugil cephalus, collected from the estuarine and inshore waters of Goa, India. Fecundity ranged from 43,000 to 5,13,000 ova in specimens varying in length from 140 mm to 315 mm. The relationships between the number of ripe ovarian eggs and the length of the fish, weight of the fish and gonad weight were determined. The fecundity of M. cephalus increases at the rate of three times the total length (F alpha L3). The relationships between fecundity and fish weight, gonad weight were linear
