Studies on photosynthetic bacteria. 3. use of photosynthetic bacteria in sewage treatment

A. Aguiar, J. DeSouza

Abstract

Green photosynthetic bacteria were used for anaerobic digestion of sewage in the presence of light. The Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) was tested after short intervals. The BOD results obtained every week which showed that these bacteria do help in lowering the BOD of sewage after about three weeks Chlorobium thiosulfatophilum gave the best results wherein the BOD of raw sewage ranging from 81-120 mg/1 with about 10 cells/ml was brought down to 15-22 mg/l within 21 days. Another species of green photocynthetic bacteria, Chlorobium limicola did not seem to have much effect on the BOD results
