Diel and tidal variations in zooplanktonic populations in the Zuari Estuary, Goa

S.C. Goswami, R.A. Selvakumar, U. Goswami

Zooplankton distribution was studied at two stations in the Zuari Estuary, Goa, over the entire tidal cycle and during different seasons. The highest value of zooplankton standing crop (biomass) was obtained during the period of low salinity regime. Variations in the occurrence and abundance of major planktonic groups and their species were influenced by diel rhythm, tidal oscillations and seasons. Nocturnal abundance of zooplankters was seen at both the stations. During flood tide of the day neritic organisms were transported by tidal currents into the estuarine region. A few limnetic species were also observed in the zooplankton samples collected during monsoon period at a station located in the mid-reaches of the estuary. Spatial and temporal variations of dominant zooplanktonic groups and common species are discussed
