Distribution of Sapphirina (Copepoda, Crustacea) in the northwestern Indian Ocean

L.K. Rajaram, S. Krishnaswamy

Abstract

This report is based on the analysis of 203 samples of zooplankton collected by R.R.S. 'Discovery' during the International Indian Ocean Expedition. On the basis of numerical data obtained from the analysis of the preserved samples, the distribution of various species of Sapphirina are discussed in relation to the distribution of total zooplankton biomass. Highest volume of zooplankton biomass in the Indian Ocean were found in the areas of the Somali Coast and the coast of Saudi Arabia. In these areas various species of the epiplanktonic Sapphirina occur abundantly
