Genus Haloptilus (Copepoda: Calanoida) from the equatorial region of the Indian Ocean

Abstract

The genus Haloptilus from the equatorial zone of the Indian Ocean (5 degrees N-5 degrees S) was represented by 8 species, namely, H. longicornis, H. paralongicirrus, H. ornatus, H. spiniceps, H. mucronatus, H. acutifrons, H. oxycephalus and H. austini. The species of the genus were present in greater numbers towards south of the equator. Their peak abundance was noticed at the westernmost transect (52 degrees E) where probably upwelling occurs
