Some observations on life history of the silver side, Pranesus pinguis (Lacepede) from Vellar Estuary
Abstract
The early life history of the brackishwater fish Pranesus pinguis is described. The eggs and larvae were reared in the laboratory upto 72 hour stage (4 stages) and the rest of the stages from 3.2 postlarvae to 21.5 mm juvenile (8 stages) were collected from plankton samples. Rate of larval growth and the morphometric measurements have been described. The seasonal occurrence of the eggs and larvae for a period of one year (November 1977 to October 1978) in relation to the environmental parameters of the estuary, is also discussed
