Distribution of calcium and magnesium in the Vellar estuary

S. Palanichamy, T. Balasubramanian

The distribution of calcium and magnesium in three different locations covering marine, tidal and freshwater zones of the Vellar estuary was studied for a period of one year (November, 1984 to October, 1985). The overall calcium and magnesium concentration ranged from 238 to 371 mg/l and 740 to 1243 mg/l respectively. Higher values of calcium and magnesium were observed during high tide than during low tide. Both calcium and magnesium concentration increased towards marine zone of the estuary, coinciding with high salinity condition. Summer period recorded higher values than the other three seasons, whereas lower value was encountered during monsoon period and low during summer period
