Fecundity of the mud crab Scylla serrata (Forskal)

P.N. Prasad, B. Neelakantan

Based upon the observations of 171 ovigerous females of Scylla serrata collected during December 1984-November 1985, the fecundity relationships are discussed. The number of eggs carried by ovigerous females showed a wide fluctuation ranging from 52,025 to 20,22,500. A noticeable increase of egg production was observed in 90 to 140 mm size range, but thereafter the increase was not proportionate with the body size. Carapace width and egg mass weight were found to be the better indices to estimate the fecundity than that of somatic weight of the crab
