J.K.P. Edward, K. Ayyakkannu

Abstract

The variations of phytoplankton with special reference to abundance and distribution have been studied in relation to various physico-chemical parameters. Regular monthly samplings were made from two stations in the Kollidam Estuary, Tamil Nadu, India for a period of two years. Collections were made during every full moon during high tide. The maximum plankton density for both the years was recorded in the summer season whereas the minimum was noted in the monsoon season. The dominant species were Stephanopyxis palmeriana, Chaetoceros convolutum, C. didymum, Bellerochea malleus, Coscinodiscus concinnus and Asterionella japonica
