Size-fractionated primary productivity in Hooghly Estuary

T.K. De, S.K. Ghosh, T.K. Jana, A. Choudhury

The organic carbon production of nanoplankton in the Hooghly Estuary, West Bengal, India was found to be between 7.49 and 30.05 mg C/M super(3)/h, which was 38 to 73.6% of the total primary production. Significant negative correlation was observed between nano and net plankton productivity. Nitrate-nitrogen showed near conservative behaviour. Ammonium-nitrogen is more efficiently utilized than nitrate-nitrogen by nanoplankton
