Starvation induced alterations in oxygen consumption and organic constituents of penaeid prawn, penaeus indicus (H. Milne Edwards)

The changes in the biochemical constituents viz. total carbohydrates, total proteins and total lipids in the mid gut gland and muscle tissue of starved Penaeus indicus was studied. Total carbohydrates, proteins and lipids decreased under starvation stress in P. indicus. The animals exhibited `lipid oriented' metabolism showing maximum utilisation of lipids during starvation. Midgut gland was affected more than muscle tissue. The rate of oxygen consumption significantly decreased by 15th day indicating the minimal utilisation of reserve food material to withstand longer periods of starvation
