Distribution of meiofauna in the Gautami-Godavari estuarine system

B. Kondalarao

Quantitative distribution of meiofauna in terms of animals per unit area from seven different biotopes of the Gautami-Godavari estuarine system revealed the existence of 11 major taxa. In the lower reaches of the estuary where the average salinity is 18.3 ppt and the rich organic matter (average 2.2%) producing mangrove biotope, meiofauna occurred in high density. The mangrove biotope supported high density of harpacticoid copepods (102 nos./10 cm(to the power 2)). The particle size of the sediment and the salinity of the water influenced the distribution of tardigrades and kinorhynchs
