B. Srikrishnadhas, K. Ramamoorthi

Abstract

The life-history of Spio filicornis has been studied by rearing larvae from egg masses in the laboratory and by examining larvae from plankton samples. The early development has been studied from the eggs laid inside the tube. Development upto 3-setiger stage took place within the egg mass and further development upto the 22 setiger stage was pelagic. The larvae began to metamorphose when they attained 18-22 setigers. The laboratory reared worms spawned from January to July and larvae were also recorded from the plankton during the same period. The distribution and abundance of planktonic larvae have been related to the environmental factors
